Rustic Bread
Emma Eilback

This is a great little project to make your own rustic bread loaves and buns. Although Fimo clay makes brilliant miniature food items it can be expensive if you need to buy lots of different colours. This project uses items that you will probably already have, and it gives a different look to Fimo.

You will need:

  • Plain Flour
  • Salt
  • a small mug
  • mixing bowl
  • spoon
  • small paint brush
  • various tools( cocktail stick, knife etc)
  • 2 teaspoons of coffee granules
  • a baking tray or grease proof paper
  • water
  • gloss varnish
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • To make the dough recipe you need to use a small mug. Fill half of the mug with salt and then add it to the mixing bowl. Add a full cup of plain flour to the bowl and mix the two ingredients together. Add small amounts of water, stirring the mixture until you get a dough consistency. Don't worry if you add too much water, add some more flour to soak it up.

Preheat the oven to around 150degree Celcius.

Take a small lump of dough and roll it in your hands, begin to make different shapes and have a little practice to get used to the texture. Think of the different types of bread you can buy, and then begin to create your own little loaves and buns. If the dough becomes sticky, simply rub your hands in a little flour and then roll the dough in your hands. Place the various breads on a non stick baking tray or sheet of grease proof paper. Use a knife, or clay tool to make markings on the top of some of the bread.

Bake the bread for around 15- 20 minutes, but please check it every 5 minutes. The loaves are cooked when the underside is hard and makes a hollow noise if you tap it.

Allow the breads to cool thoroughly.

Mix a table spoon of cold water with the coffee granules, and then paint each loaf with the coffee mixture. Once the coffee has dried you can coat your mini breads with a thin layer of gloss or clear nail varnish. I have used a slightly watered down PVA glue. While the varnish is still wet, grind some black pepper on to some of the items to make a seeded look.

I hope you will enjoy making this project. If you have any problems post your queries in the Support Forum
