Make a Steamer Trunk
Emma Eilback

Just after the turn of the century there was a new luxurious way for the wealthy to travel. New ocean liners were equipped with Turkish baths, gymnasiums and other "modern" amenities for the first class Victorian traveller.  Journeys across the Atlantic took many days; the wealthy passengers had many items of luggage to accompany them on their travels.  This project shows you how to make a "leather" steamer trunk for your dolls house or miniature scene.

You will need:

  • 20x25cm piece of dark brown leatherette material
  • All purpose adhesive
  • Piece of dressmakers chalk or white pencil
  • 2 5mm gold jump rings
  • 1 miniature cardboard trunk
  • Scissors

You should be able to get these items in large craft shops, however you can buy miniature trunks and other craft supplies online: www.thecraftpackcompany.co.uk

1. On the reverse side of the leatherette fabric, using the calk draw around the two sides of the domed lid and the two sides of the trunk base. Then draw right from the very front edge of the domed lid, over the lid, down the back of the trunk, across the bottom and back around to the front.  This last part needs to be done in one piece for a neat finish. Don't worry too much if you pattern is not totally accurate; the fabric will have a little stretch if it is too short, or you can trim excess fabric later.

2. You should now have four sections drawn onto the fabric. With a pair of sharp scissors, cut out all of the shapes. Keep your left over fabric handy, you will need this soon.

3. Spread a little glue on the sides of the domed lid, and then stick on the correct pattern pieces. Your fabric should be slightly bigger than the card side, this is good because you need that overlap to make a neat join with the central piece.

4. Cover both sides of the trunk base in the same way.

5. Starting from the front of the domed lid, glue the large central piece all the way around the trunk finishing at the front. When the whole trunk is covered you can trim off any excess material.

6. Cut 2 thin strips of material, long enough to go round your trunk. These with the rings will form straps and buckles.

7. Glue the straps around your trunk, thread a ring over each end of the strap before you glue it down.

8. Cut two smaller strips to glue at either side of the trunk to make handles.

Place your steamer trunk in the attic of your house, or perhaps in the bedroom as the maid packs for an exciting adventure!
